Serenity Charity Screenings, June 17 and 23
    Hey guys!

I wanted to let you all know that there are two charity screening events of the Firefly movie Serenity coming up in June. Proceeds benefit the charity Equality Now, a group which works to promote gender equality and human rights for women around the world.

South Bay Can't Stop the Serenity Screening
    Sunday, June 17
    7:30pm
    Camera 7 Pruneyard
    1875 S. Bascom Ave
    Campbell
tickets: $10 in advance / $15 at the door

San Francisco Can't Stop the Serenity Screening
    Saturday, June 23
    8:00pm
    AMC 14
    1000 Van Ness Ave
    San Francisco
    tickets: $12

In addition to supporting a very worthwhile charity, both events promise to be a lot of fun, energetic and filled with fans from all over the Bay Area. And hey, it's a chance to see Serenity on the big screen again!

On a personal note, I'm helping to organize the south bay event and would really like to see it succeed. So I'd love in particular to see you guys there!

Do you know someone who might be interested in joining us for the movie? Please do pass this invite along to anyone you think may like to come, or anyone you think you can con into coming! :p The more people we have, the more fun it will be, and the more money we can donate.

    Quotes of the evening
For the first time in 4 years, Sandpanther and I worked on music videos together in the same place, rather than across 1000 miles. To commemorate the event, I jotted down a few quotes from the evening.

The Ghosts of Treize are more common than you might think.

I have a philosophical question - if you can't see the ghost in real time, then is it really a ghost?

Uh-oh. I fear some of our video clips have been abducted by aliens.

Here's one of them. I think I was the alien.

    Bloody mouse... shut up!

I'm awake, I'm paranoid... the answer is 12.

Okay. It's good... except for the mouse. Which I don't like... but I will live with the mouse.

    Dreams
So, how am I suppose to get past the whole loosing the job thing and everything associated with it when I keep dreaming about it over and over? Every time I think I'm starting to put it behind me and not think about it for a while, I have another dream about the whole thing, putting me mentally right back where I started.

Killer vampire deer and other wildlife
Cirdan and I went on a nice hike yesterday afternoon, over at Rancho San Antonio park in the Cupertino foothills. I should start by thanking her, because if she hadn't come with me for this, I probably would have procrastinated and ended up not going. Again. I think we walked about 5.5-6 miles overall. Good exercise, plus a nice change to catch up on everything. Along the way, we saw a variety of wildlife - tons of little lizzards sunning on the path, several deer and a couple of adorable fawns, and a little flock of quail. Cirdan mentioned at one point that we didn't want to run into any mountain lions, but I think we were pretty safe from that, as I seem to be an anti-mountain lion charm. However, I pointed out that we were safe from the deer only as long as they weren't killer vampire deer. Luckily, none of the deer appeared to fall into this category, or if they did, they decided to act like normal deer and allow us safe passage.

In other news, I finished all the carpet steam cleaning for the moment, just in time to return the steamer to the store. I managed to get one run done on the easily accessable areas of my parents' room, and a couple of runs in my sister's room. Good thing I started as soon as I got the machine Mon evening, though. Carpets take a fair while to dry, between runs. The end result isn't completely clean, but it's better than it was before. At least now I can actually move into the room. Next, to figure out how to put together the bedframe...

    carpet steamer
The first run in my sister's room with the carpet steamer is done, except for the furniture I didn't move. I think it is doing a bit better job than the shapooer - the dirt appears to be a lighter shade. I'll end up having to go over the carpet multiple times, I think, as many as I can in the rental period.

On the down side, this thing goes through water like anything. I keep having to refill it, which involves several trips to the kitchen for hot tap water each time.

    carpet cleaning query
Does anyone here know anything about carpet cleaning, specifically a comparison of carpet shampooing vs steam cleaning? I looked over the process description for a steamer rental unit down at Safeway, and the basic proceedure (shampoo and water going into carpet, brush agitation, and vacuum to suck up water and dirt) seems basically the same as my parents' carpet shampooer. The only difference I see is that the water in the steamer is hot.

So, does that make enough of a difference to make it worth it to rent a steam cleaner? I tried putting steaming hot water in our shampooer, but it still only got a percentage of the dirt out of the carpet in my sister's room. Given that the carpet was originally a light beige color and now has sections that are dark grey, I'm wondering if anything will get it approaching clean. However, my mom wants to keep trying, until we get it cleaner... which means I can't move into the room yet.

I tried to google this question, but only came across one option repeated over and over again on various "getting your house ready to sell" webpages.

    pies
I baked homemade pies for the first time this last weekend. My first pie - a blackberry/blueberry mix, with blackberries picked from the backyard - turned out pretty well. Alas, the repeat last night was screwed - I forgot to turn the stupid oven off the preheat setting, and totally scorched the pastry. Hopefully today's pie, to be brought as a dessert offering to Santa Cruz tonight, will turn out better.

    Nightwish tickets
To those who are planning to attend the Nightwish concert in SF in Sept... I'm wondering if perhaps we should play it safe and go ahead and get our tickets soon? None of the US concerts are listed as sold out on the official Nightwish webpage yet, but I noticed a few of their other concerts are. I at least would be quite bummed to miss the concert just because it sold out before I bought a ticket.

    LJ settings update
I'm trying an experiment: I've temporarily changed my LJ settings so that anyone can reply/comment on my posts, rather than friends only. I've always been twitchy about doing so... I'm not quite sure why, it's probably one of those personal weird neorotic things... Anyway, I'll see how this goes and evaluation whether to keep it this way or change it back on an ongoing basis.

    Googling
Anyone here know how to make your webpage more accessable on google? ie, how do I make it easier for people to find me on the web? I want to make my webpage and resume easier for job-giving people (such as headhunters) to find. (If that makes sense...)

    not sleeping well
Next time I say that it probably isn't a good idea for me to have (more) caffeine, but am tempted to go ahead anyway because the ice tea tastes so good...

I did this on Sat, and haven't slept well since then. I went to bed at a decent hour Sat night, but woke up in the middle of the night. Then I had a nap yesterday late afternoon, woke with a headache, didn't feel well for the rest of the evening, and didn't get to sleep till after 2am this morning. Woke up at 4am for a bit, then slept in till about 11:30, but kept waking up on and off so it wasn't the most restful sleep. I really, really need to get on a decent sleep schedule, going to bed at a decently early hour.

    House stuff
To my surprise, my mom did want to move the beds on Thurs, rather than waiting. So, my dad and I went ahead and moved them Thurs. On the downside, I somehow hurt my back doing this. One minute I was fine, the next second ... owwwww, the pain. I don't know quite what I did, just that it hurt. My dad suggested that it might be a bad muscle cramp rather than a pulled muscle; I don't know how to tell the difference. For a while it hurt to breath, but luckily that started to lessen later in the afternoon. Now (2 days later) it is still sore, but not as bad. I notice it most when I'm turning my head while driving, with some residual soreness just going around in general. But it's much better.

    Nightwish in SF
*bow* Many, many, many thanks to Cirdan_Havens, who discovered that Nightwish will be performing a concert up in SF this coming Sept. Sandpanther and I were so used to the idea that they didn't have US performances that we simply haven't checked the concert schedule. If it weren't for Cirdan, I doubt we would have found out about the concert, except perhaps sometime long past it, at which point we would have been very sad.

    And we're still...
    moving

    cleaning

    not thrilled

Have to be out of apartment no later than 3pm tomorrow. Just about everything other than computer is packed, but still need two loads to go to the storage place and one to the house. Some of the cleaning is done, some remains.

After this post, I will be offline until after I'm settled in at my parents' place. Their computer makes a banana slug look like a speed demon, so my access will be more limited.

    Hate moving
    Hate, hate, hate, hate moving.

First there is all the neverending sorting, packing, and carrying things. Then there is the cleaning, which I haven't even started yet.

Best of all, there is the figuring out where the hell to put everything part.Read more... )
